While this is a book meant for middle-graders, if you’re sensitive to the death of animals, including pets, be wary of going into it. Therefore, I cannot comment on the comparison. I vaguely remember reading that book in third or fourth grade, but I don’t recall anything of what it’s about. I’ve heard that this is a retelling of Scott O’Dell’s Island of the Blue Dolphins. I won’t go into details because spoilers, but that part of the story was really unsatisfying. One complaint that I had is that when we find out what was behind the evacuation, it’s sort of a half-assed explanation that doesn’t make much sense. Most of what she did was right, and it was nice reading a sensible survival story made for middle-graders. In a situation where most people (including many adults) would panic and shut-down, Maddie started collecting food, water, and supplies. So much so that I honestly had a hard time believing that she was just twelve-years-old. Going into the book with pre-existing survival knowledge, I was impressed by the steps that Maddie took to keep herself and her canine companion alive. I’m not ashamed of the fact that I’m a bit of a prepper (and grew up on books like Hatchet). The thing that struck me hardest about this novel was that Maddie appears to be more prepared and sensible than most adults that I know.

Hyperbole and a Half is a webcomic and blog written and illustrated by Allie Brosh. Hyperbole and a Half | Book by Allie Brosh | Official Publisher Page | Simon & Schuster. But Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things that Happened, by Allie Brosh, is an honest-to-goodness summer read. They’re long nonfiction books that might look a little out of place beside the pool or on the beach. 24 Can you say a hyperbole? Is hyperbole and a half nonfiction? The magic-magic, though cleverly presented with the help of Scott Lehrer’s eerie sound effects, Alvin Hough Jr.’s sometimes spooky music, Japhy Wideman’s scary-movie light flashes and, perhaps most arrestingly, Jeff Sugg’s ghostly projections – isn’t nearly as spellbinding as the simple and awesome pleasure of watching a stage full of young actors coming into their own and older ones displaying the skills and talents honed by decades. Indeed, it’s the quotidian magic that comes from daily striving and surviving that Richardson and her cast – which also includes Ray Fisher, Trai Byers, the remarkable Michael Potts and a very funny April Matthis – that really hits the right chords in this Piano Lesson. Jackson, John David Washington ( BlacKkKlansman, Amsterdam), and Danielle Brooks ( Orange is the New Black, the upcoming film adaptation of The Color Purple) are only the most obvious names to mention first – that’s some considerable Hollywood star power – and the three turn in performances so thoroughly embedded in Wilson’s idiosyncratic universe of the earthbound -= where money and death and grudges and family ties and maybe murder are the stuff of the everyday – and the otherworldly, with vengeful spirits and beloved ancestors demanding to be heard. Actors' Equity President Kate Shindle Says "Too Soon" To Predict WGA Strike Impact On Tony Awards Other than that it was a paint by numbers retelling of Bluebeard. Quite liked this, but mostly because of the ending where the heroine's mum kills Bluebeard and saves her daughter from death. Also, some sentences read more like paragraphs than sentences, they never bloody ended. There were a number of times I got lost as to what the hell was going on and had to keep re-reading sentences over and over to get some clarity. Hated the writing, it was convoluted, complicated, and nonsensical. There were only a couple of them that I actually found somewhat enjoyable, the rest were rubbish. Having a few heroines with sexual agency didn't magically make them feminist or ground breaking, it takes a lot more than that to modernise a fairy tale. For the most part, I didn't feel that was true. I had high expectations for this, Carter's fairy tale retellings are meant to be well known for being feminist, gothic, and original. The original 75-issue series, along with its assorted constellation of spinoff series and books, is a multifarious anthology of beautifully illustrated and brilliantly told stories that run the gamut from bone-chilling to soul-stirring. What begins as a story about Morpheus, the immortal King of Dreams, and his quest for redemption gradually evolves into something even larger: a story about the nature of stories themselves and their essential relationship to humanity. One part pulp horror, one part urban fantasy comic replete with Shakespearean and mythological cameos, the comic covers a lot of ground with a host of characters both mundane and otherworldly. Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is a many-splendored wonder. |
